The designs were scratched out using a technique called Sgraffitto, meaning a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour, typically done in plaster or stucco on walls, or in slip / underglaze on ceramics before firing. The inside of the planter is glazed in a clear gloss glaze.
Liquid 14 carat gold was brushed on the completed pot after the second firing, left to dry for a day then fired for a third time.
Slight imperfections and variations of one piece from another give hand-crafted works the intrinsic uniqueness that makes them all the more lovable.
